Yarmouk University (Arabic: جامعة اليرموك, also abbreviated YU) is a university in Jordan. It was established in 1976. Located in the northern town of Irbid, it has a student body of roughly 31,000.
The university has several international partnerships with overseas universities. Within the joint TEMPUS program, international students of Brandenburg Technical University conduct researches in Yarmouk University as exchange students.
Yarmouk University was founded in 1976 by a Royal Decree. YU is a government funded institution, but enjoys a considerable degree of autonomy. It is governed by a Board of Trustees to which members are appointed by a Royal Decree for specific terms.
Yarmouk University also has a subsidiary Private Secondary School on its Campus. The School is called Yarmouk University Model School (YUMS), though the school enjoys a level of autonomy from the University, admissions are restricted to the Children of the University staff and various other academics. The School has a dress code.
Some of its well known graduates are: Younis Al Qawasmi, Osama Khater Sa'ad Farah and Jamal Ali.

In 1976, at a time that was only one university in Jordan, Yarmouk University was established to update all the society demands and create undergraduate education for the largest possible number for the public secondary students who are increasing every year as a result of education concerns in Jordan..
In June, 24, 1976 The Royal High Decree was issued for establishing Yarmouk University Royal Commission. The first school year was beginning in October, 9, 1976 and the number of student was only 640.
In the Twenty fifth year of his Govern especially in June, 16, 1977, His Majesty late King Hussein opened Yarmouk University. Its name was come from Arabic and Islamic Connotations.
During school year 1986/1987, the faculties of (Engineering, Pharmacy, Medicine, Public Health, Medical Science Backing, Dental, and nursing) were transferred to the main position for the university. During this The Royal High Decree was issued for establishing Jordan University of Science & Technology and its campus is the main position of Yarmouk University. Lately additional faculties were established like Agriculture and Veterinarian medicine to form the nucleus of Jordan University of Science & Technology.
Now Yarmouk University contains 12 colleges, and these colleges contain 55 majors in Bachelor programs, 63 in Master programs and 18 in Ph.D. programs, which have 31,000 under graduate students until the first semester 2010/2011 and 91000 graduate students until the first semester 2008/2009.
Yarmouk University aspires to offer many majors that meet the needs of Jordanian and Arabic society.
In the year 2001 Yarmouk University celebrated in its Silver Jubilee over the 25 years of its establishment, after that in 2006 Yarmouk University celebrated over the 30 years of its establishment. In 2010, Yarmouk University celebrated 34 years of existence, and will likely celebrate 35 years of being a university at some point in 2011.

These departments offer B.A. programs. In addition to undergraduate programs, the Faculty offers M.A. programs in the Departments of Arabic Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, History, Sociology and Social Work, and Political Sciences. The faculty offers Ph.D. programs in the Department of Arabic Language and Literature and in the Department of History. The number of M.A. and Ph.D. students enrolled in the graduate programs of the faculty is 556 and 164, respectively (2009). The number of the Faculty teaching staff was 118 members, and that of its administrative employees was 28 in 2009.

Yarmouk University has an FM radio station that broadcasts 24/7 at the frequency 105.7 FM. The station Yarmouk FM broadcasts news, music, political, social, and academic programs, and weather forecast.[30]
